Look here every week to see the scriptures that will be part of this coming Sunday's worship service. Most Christian churches follow a three year cycle through the bible called the Common Lectionary. Each week one selection each is offered from the Old Testament (the Torah, prophets, etc), wisdom literature (Psalms, Songs of Solomon, etc) , Gospels (Mathew, Mark, Luke or John) and Epistles (letters from Paul, James, Timothy, etc). It is likely that you will hear the preacher offer these readings the following Sunday. We will post the scriptures from the bible and you may participate by posting or following the postings offered by others including context (what was going on back in the biblical day), cross references, reflections, witnessing or questions. Check back here during the week to see how the discussion progresses. Our hope is that by Sunday you would have read the word, pondered it and when you hear the word spoken in church it will resonate all the more. May the Holy Spirit guide us and may His word be truly written on your
[Click to continue reading ... Live the Word to Sunday]

September 4, 2010 [Green] Seventeenth Sunday after Pentecost

Jeremiah 18:1-11 The word that came to Jeremiah from the LORD…

This is the word of God coming to us through the ages from the prophet Jeremiah. True to his role Jeremiah relays tough words. As a potter would destroy a weak vessel and start over, so would God with a nation. How do these words speak to you, do they sound fearful, or do you see hope in them?

Psalm 139:1-6, 13-18 – O LORD you have searched me and known me…

Who is the writer of Psalms? Many are said to come from King David, or else may be from close followers of King David’s way of thinking about God and approaching God in Prayer. Here we have the psalmist telling us what he does not know. This God of Abraham, Moses and the prophets knows every one of our thoughts, what is on our hearts and yet God is unknowable. Such are the largeness of his thoughts.

Philemon 1-21 Paul, a prisoner of Christ Jesus…

Paul writes to his co-league, student or partner, Philemon about Philemon’s slave Onesimus. Do you think Paul is appealing to Philemon or directing him? At the least Paul is confident Philemon will “do even more” than Paul requests. Such is the way of Paul, so involved with Jesus that he is captive for him or with him. When faced with ethical or humanistic questions, Paul shows confidence that any one who turns her or his life to Christ can only respond positively. Notice, also, the role of women in the early church.

Luke 14:25-33 Now large crowds were traveling with him and he turned and said to them…

And so how do you respond to Jesus when he demands so much? How was it that Paul considered himself captive in Christ? What is it that Paul understood about Jesus? Is it that the price we pay is dwarfed by the price Jesus paid? Is it that Paul caught a glimpse of heaven beyond and the glory that waits us? Or is it that in all Paul’s sufferings, beaten, imprisoned, almost martyred several times, he enjoyed heavens blessings that saw him though and in joy throughout?

Consider further, more words that bring life:

Deuteronomy 30:15-20 See I have set before you today, life and prosperity, death and adversity…

Psalm 1 Happy are those who…

.

The Newtown United Methodist Church and its parishioners are very aware that hunger, unfortunately, is a growing issue in our community and take many actions to help ease it.

With your help, last year, Faith Food Pantry gave out 3,800 meals to only Newtown residents. As of July, they have given out 3,400 meals to only people from Newtown.

In the first 7 months, they have given out 90% of last year’s total!

We are asking everyone who goes to the Labor Day Parade to

bring 1 can of food in a plastic bag.

Put it on the curb along the parade route.

1 CAN is a float in the parade. As we move through the parade route, we collect the food.

After the parade, we bring it to the Faith Food Pantry.

Thank you so much!
